The main objective of the Blue Flag programme is to promote sustainable development in coastal, river and lake areas based on a set of criteria involving environmental education, bathing water quality, beach management, services and safety.

The Blue Flag is a symbol of quality awarded annually to beaches and marinas that distinguishes the efforts of various entities to enable local development to coexist with respect for the environment, raising awareness among citizens in general, and decision-makers in particular, of the need to protect the marine, coastal and lake environments and encouraging actions to resolve existing problems.

Each year, in line with the theme launched by the European Blue Flag Association (ABAE), the Water Pavilion draws up a calendar of activities for the public during the bathing season, inside the Water Pavilion and on the beaches of Porto. These activities are developed by environmental education technicians and partner entities that join in this cause of raising awareness.

As a Blue Centre of the Blue Flag Programme, the Water Pavilion, together with its partners, has prepared a programme full of activities for the whole family on Porto's beaches.

Porto Ambiente -  Recycling is Fish

Monitoring the beach cleaning teams and environmental awareness initiatives for the proper disposal and reuse of waste, encouraging reuse to become not just an experience but a lifestyle. The action will culminate in the creation of a collective artwork by the participants, using waste collected from the beaches of Porto, as part of the “Reciclar é Fish” initiative.

LIPOR - Impact of present behaviours on the future

The activity is based on the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proclaimed by the UN in its action agenda for 2030, in particular SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), 12 (Sustainable Production and Consumption), 13 (Climate Action), 14 (Protect Marine Life), and 15 (Protect Life on Land). We believe that every citizen should take an active role in achieving the above-mentioned SDGs and, as such, should embody behavioural changes consistent with this challenge.

The game ‘Right or Wrong?’ is a creative, dynamic and flexible way to lead participants to reflect individually and collectively on their behaviour, catalysing them towards good practices and inspiring them to make a difference, with a particular focus on our daily actions and their implications for the past, present and future of communities.

COLORADD - Ambient Colour

The aim is to use special glasses to simulate colour blindness (deuteranopia) and help children identify situations on the beach that could cause confusion for a colour-blind person – for example, not being able to distinguish the colours of flags (safety in beach accessibility) and beach recycling bins (for effective and inclusive preservation of the environmental ecosystem) – identification of ColorADD symbols on these supports. In this way, children not only understand through practice the difficulties encountered in everyday life by colour-blind people, but also learn the ColorADD Code in a fun and interactive way.

SERVIÇO MUNICIPAL DE PROTEÇÃO CIVIL DO PORTO I REGIMENTO DE SAPADORES DE BOMBEIROS DO PORTO - Safety culture: preparing today for tomorrow

The awareness-raising activities, organised under the Civil Protection scheme, are educational, interactive and focused on safety and risk prevention. They also cover best practices for beach safety, how to read beach signage and the rules associated with the flags. Everyone will be able to put theory into practice through demonstrations and practice of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR); the Recovery Position (RP); and airway clearance for adults and children, drawing on the extensive experience of the Porto Fire Brigade.
